about lehry

Mohammed is currently a master's student at the Norwegian Theatre Academy, Fredrikstad. In the past, he served as the founding member and the Artistic Director of the Coimbatore-based theatre group, DOT Theatre. The focus of his work is to create ground-breaking performances and also to mainstream theatre education as a tool for social awareness, development and community building. His work with DOT theatre engages children in schools, working with corporates and non-government organisations in order to improve written and spoken communication and improve diversity and inclusion in their vast workspaces and engage with audiences from various walks of life. I enjoy speaking about theatre and teaching but find myself to be the happiest when he is working with children.

artist statement

I am 24, male, atheist, Muslim, theatrewala. The latter is so rare in this world that even google seems to point out to me that it is an error. But, ironically, it is the one identity of mine that I cherish the most. Theatre has been home from a very young age for me. It is in the uncomfortable costumes, scantily lit backstages, puffs of smoke and deafening silences and applauses where I feel most comfortable. I am and have always been a collector of experiences. It is only later that I  realised that it is in the sharing of these collected experiences that truly brought me happiness.  Having spent the last decade in the theatre, from tiny, small performances in supremely tiny spaces to large auditoria with complex lighting and unthinkable set changes, I have discovered that the hero of these performances was never me, but it was the story. And with the realisation comes another. If it is the story that is the hero, and not the form, why must I limit myself to the theatre to express these stories? Therefore, my current exploration in the arts is to apply myself to as many different forms and modalities of storytelling as possible. I am in a constant search for ways to bring out the stories that don’t usually find an eager ear. Basically, a long, excruciating break-up with the theatre and a more casual relationship with the other allied forms. I am unendingly in the search for a  medium, a space, a forum where a certain story can feel like it is at home. And I only wish to be its vehicle to arrive at these spaces.
