Bearded Chronicle

Produced and Funded by

Mohammed Ellyas Lehry

The Bearded Chronicle is a performance art piece that is an investigation on the process of racialization of a Muslim man in Norway. During the piece Lehry shares incidents of racism that he has faced over the two years while living and studying in Norway.

The performance delves into the practice of growing a beard as a witness to the racialization process and identifies it as central to the identity of the muslim man. The performance ends with Lehry inviting the audience to “help him be part of their society” by shaving his beard off.

The performance asks the question: will the audience participate in ‘helping’ lehry? or will it reflect on the core of the issue at hand?

This performance was created with the support of the Norwegian Theatre Academy, Fredrikstad and premiered at Paragraph 112 Festival by Østfold Internasjonale Teater.
